Sports and Fitness Balance Training

Because the human body is inherently designed to be in a natural and sub-consciously balanced state, balance training has long been an ignored training protocol for many athletes. The common theory being, "if it ain't broke, I don't need to fix it." But balance and agility can quickly dissolve as soon as an athlete begins to move through their sport-specific movements and outside forces, self-movement and the environment create instability.

A defensive tackle might start off balanced in his stance, only to find himself flat on his back after being pan-caked moments later. He started off balanced, but didn't end up that way. Go ahead, swing a bat, catch or throw a ball, swing a golf club, shoot a free throw, snatch a barbell, bang out a set of plyometric jumps or just try some squats. Will you be balanced throughout the full range of motion?

Chances are you will need some form of balance recovery during any sport-specific movement, whether it's sport, fitness or dance. Add to that, the fact that the body moves as one entire unit, never one joint at a time and it becomes even clearer why balance training should be standard for the enhancement of any physical activity.

'You only have to look at the grace and fluidity of movement in some of the great athletes of our time'. Jordan, Ali, Gretzky, Montana and Swann to name a few. Superior balance and agility allowed them to move almost effortlessly while performing.

Now, doesn't balance training seem like a logical addition to any sport or training protocol? Higher performance levels, increased strength, speed, power, agility and flexibilty, rehabilitation, injury prevention, and developing balance recovery skills all while having fun. What more could you ask for?
