Balance Board Glossary - Balance Board Balance Training Glossary of Terms
Aerobic training - Training protocol that produces energy using
oxygen, carbs and fat.
Anaerobic threshold - The point at which the energy pathway begins
to burn fuel without oxygen
Anaerobic training - Training protocol that produces energy using
carbs and fat without oxygen.
Balance Ball - Static balance training device (also known as a
Swiss ball or a stability ball.)
Balance Boarding - the act of standing on a board placed on top
of a fulcrum for fun or sport.
Balanceboardology? - The science of Vew-Do Balance Boards.
Balance Equipment - A broad term used to describe balance training
devices such as balance boards, wobble boards, teeter/rocker boards and balance
balls.
Balance instincts - The natural ability of the
human body reacting to being out of balance
Balance recovery - The act of going from an unbalanced state back
to balanced or stable again.
Blunt Stall - A trick performed on a Performance Model Vew-Do where
the rider ollies out of the rocks groove and lands back onto the top surface of
the rock while balancing on the tail of the board.
Balance Training- Balance training is training for the ability
to recover balance or base of support (BOS) from postural sway (body movement over
your BOS) following a destabilizing stimulus caused by objects, self-motion or the
environment.
Calorie debt - The deficit created when one burns more calories
than they consume.
Deck- This is the balance board component that makes contact with
the rider's feet and spans the rock. The deck can be flat, concave or designed with
turned up nose and tail
Dynamic Balance - Balance while in motion.
Fulcrum - See " The Rock ."
Grip Tape Strips - The grip tape strips appear on the bottom of
the decks and or sub-deck and allow for increased friction between the deck and
the rock.
HDPE - High Density Poly Ethylene Plastic used in the production
of Vew-Do's bomb-proof sub-deck.
I-Beam Rail System - The I-Beam is a system of 2 end stops and
a rail that is attached to the bottom of Vew-Do's contact and mini series boards
which allow the deck to maintain contact and alignment with the rock while balance
boarding.
Kickflip - A trick performed on a Performance Model Vew-Do where the rider performs
an ollie with a complete 360 degree rotation of the deck while in the air above
the rock and lands back into the ? inch groove of the rock.
Ollie - A trick performed on a Performance Model Vew-Do where the
rider and board both leave the rock and proceed to land back into the 3/4 inch groove
of the rock.
Original Bongo Board - The Stanley Washburn Bongo Board which was
the first commercially successful balance board. Produced from 1952 to 1980.
Performance Balance Board Riding - The act of performing tricks
and stunts on a specially designed board placed on top of a multi-directional fulcrum.
Perturbation Training- Training for the ability
to oppose and counter an equal or greater weight or force and maintain or recover
balance. This is also referred to as "Dynamic/Static Counterbalance."
Plyometrics - The activity of rapid alternation of lengthening
and shortening of specific muscle groups while resistance is continuously being
applied to them.
Proprioception - A part of the Somatic Sensory system that allows
you to sense the positioning of parts of the body in relation to
other parts of the body using external sensors in the feet and the hands and internal
sensors in the joints.
Rocker Board - "See Teeter Board ."
7-ply and 9-ply zero void Maple Plywood- A highly durable and superior
production technique used in building most Vew-Do Decks.
Shuvit - A trick performed on any balance board where the rider
jumps up in the air while having rotated the board and rock 180 degrees under his
feet before landing back on the board.
Static Balance - Balance that is stationary.
Sub-deck - The "bomb-proof" injection molded component that appears
on the bottom of the Performance series models and allows for increased durability
and trick potential. These sub decks are made of High Density Poly Ethylene.
Superior Traction Surface (STS) A brush able water base sandpaper-like
finish material applied to the surface of many Vew-Do models The STS allows for
increased friction between the riders feet and the top surface of the deck.
Tapered rock - A rock (Roller) with angled or radial shaped ends
that allows a rider to experience toe and heal motion as well as for and aft.
Teeter Board -A static balance training/rehab device with an elongated
centrally located component that allows the rider to tilt in only two directions.
The Rock - Sometimes referred to as the roller, the rock sits beneath
the board and rolls back and forth on the ground.
Wobble Board - A static balance training/rehab device with a fixed
central point that allows the rider to tip in all directions yet does not have for
and aft motion.
